Asuka Langley Soryu is a character from Gainax's 1995 anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. The daughter of an American father and a half-Japanese, half-German mother, Asuka is a teenage pilot who pilots the red humanoid mecha EVA-02, and possesses a boastful and aggressive personality.
Asuka is well-known in the anime fandom for being one of the earliest examples of the tsundere love interest, which is exhibited in her love-hate relationship with the protagonist Shinji Ikari, whom she calls baka (Japanese term for "idiot / stupid") many times. The redhead pilot is also notable for her rivalry against the blue-haired Rei Ayanami, which is one of the oldest and most intense fan rivalries known as "waifu wars".
In the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, her name is changed to Asuka Langley Shikinami. Her personality in the movies diverges in several significant ways, but for the wiki's intents and purposes, her movie and original version are the same competitor.
